StayAwake.page uses the Screen Wake Lock API, a browser feature that asks the operating system not to dim or lock the display while this tab is visible. It is not a hidden autoplaying video, and it does not change your system power settings. Close the tab and your normal sleep behaviour returns immediately.

Common questions
- Does StayAwake.page work in every browser?
- StayAwake.page uses the Screen Wake Lock API, so it works in Chrome, Edge, and Safari 16.4 or later, but not in Firefox.
- Does it keep working if I switch to another tab?
- The browser releases the wake lock whenever this tab is hidden, and StayAwake.page re-acquires it the moment the tab becomes visible again. Keep the tab visible, in a second window or on a second screen, for an uninterrupted hold.
- Is this the same as playing a silent video?
- No. StayAwake.page uses the Screen Wake Lock API, a documented browser feature, so it does not burn battery decoding video and does not keep audio devices busy.
- Do I need to install anything?
- No. StayAwake.page runs entirely in a browser tab, installs nothing, and requires no account.
- Does it change my system power settings?
- No. The wake lock lasts only as long as the tab is open, and closing the tab restores your normal sleep behaviour immediately.
- Will it keep the screen on when my device is locked?
- No. A screen wake lock cannot survive a locked screen or a closed laptop lid. It only stops the display dimming and sleeping on its own.
- Does the white noise use my data connection?
- No. The noise is generated in your browser with the Web Audio API rather than streamed, so it works offline and uses no bandwidth once the page has loaded.
- Does StayAwake.page track me?
- StayAwake.page uses Google Analytics to count page views and which features get used. Your tasks, timer and settings are stored only in your own browser and are never sent anywhere.
- Where are my tasks stored?
- Tasks are saved in your browser's local storage on this device only. They are not synced to an account and never leave the machine.
- What happens when the timer ends?
- StayAwake.page plays a short tone, and sends one browser notification if you allowed notifications when you started the timer.
